I was intrigued when I first heard about Hitchens – Cocktails and Ideas. A space inspired by the iconic writer Christopher Hitchens with a focus on cocktails, modern cuisine, and intellectual vibes? It sounded like the perfect blend of creativity and indulgence. So, on a breezy evening, I found myself stepping into this new gem in Khar West, curious to see if it lived up to the buzz.

The moment I walked into Hitchens, I could feel its unique personality. It wasn’t just a bar or a restaurant, it was a space that invited you to linger, think, and engage. Created by film producer Rakesh Singh and production designer Aparna Sud, the venue exudes the charm of a well-thought-out creative vision.

The two-level layout has something for everyone – a casual dining area, a vibrant bar, and an upstairs performance space for live events. It’s a place that feels intimate enough for a solo evening with a book yet lively enough to meet friends for drinks. The tribute to Christopher Hitchens is subtle but striking and sparks curiosity without overwhelming the space.

Ambiance
What struck me most about Hitchens was how effortlessly it balanced being lively and laid-back. The buzz of conversations filled the air, but it was never overwhelming. The walls were adorned with striking portraits of iconic writers and bold artworks.

Food and Drinks
The real star of the evening was, of course, the menu. The bar, led by acclaimed mixologist Pawan Singh Rawat, was everything I’d hoped for and more. I started with their signature cocktail, The Missionary – a blend of ingredients like lemongrass, milk whey, cucumber, and gin. Next, I tried the Foxhole Athetist, which was equally intriguing with its mix of tangy and fruity notes.

For food, I couldn’t resist ordering the cleverly named Bertie’s Bangers, a pork sausage cutlet. I also tried the crisp chicken tenders with chili mayo and pickled cucumbers. For mains, I decided to go with the Hibachi chicken bowl, served alongside fried black rice and Asian greens. The modern European menu, crafted by Chef Gracian de Souza and Chef Harsh Parikh, had plenty of playful yet sophisticated offerings.

Verdict
Hitchens isn’t just another addition to Mumbai’s vibrant dining scene – it’s a breath of fresh air. Whether you’re here to sip on innovative cocktails, indulge in modern cuisine, or simply soak in the energy, it’s a place that leaves an impression. For me, I know I’ll be back soon.
