Nowadays, we all are driven by our need to eat healthy. It is not just the health-conscious who seek ways to include healthy food in their diet, it is also the rest of us who wish to include delicious and nutrient-packed foods. Yes, it has always been a part of one’s life resolution to eat healthy, but how many of us manage to follow it all year round? Not me, that’s for sure.

While we know that we will never stop munching on junk food, we can always choose a healthier option. With a lot of focus on sustainability and plant-based diets, we stand at a crossroads, thinking, “Where do I go from here? Is there a way to eat healthy food that tastes as good while meeting the daily nutrient requirements?” The answer is very simple. I was skeptical of these so-called functional foods, thinking that the brands were just trying to sell the same product with prettier packaging. But, I was proved wrong on many counts, after giving them a chance.

There’s never been a better time to eat than now, with fortified functional snacks and food in the market that not only relieve hunger pangs but also provide targeted nutrition. Every time I scroll through my phone, I come across snacks that boast specific health benefits like improved digestion, increased energy levels, reduced stress levels, and much more. The market for such snacks has increased since the pandemic, and it still has the potential to grow bigger.

But what exactly is the meaning of functional foods? While there is no penned definition, you can say that functional foods are those foods that are full of nutrients like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, adaptogens, and probiotics. While foods and snacks are one side of the ever-growing, functional food industry, beverages are not that far behind.

The growing industry also includes beverage brands that manufacture smoothies, fermented drinks, and the like. They are all fortified with vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes. If that is not enough, different age groups are opting for different nutrient combinations. Youngsters and gym-goers go for protein-infused drinks while those in their late 20s, 30s, and so on opt for drinks with infused collagen.

Functional snacks and beverages are a trend of their own, but one important feature is coming up as fast as the idea of “baked chips”, a snack many have a love/hate relationship with. It is the ability to personalize your functional food based on your needs and preferences. It is becoming a telling feature of this trend, where big brands choose to customize their consumers’ needs rather than mass producing a simple product. This shift is especially beneficial for those on specific diets, be it for health reasons or otherwise. As the technology evolves, so does our way of living. It not only impacts the daily life we live, but it also affects the foods we choose to consume. Brands analyze consumer data and purchasing habits to pinpoint food preferences to elevate your eating habits and health conditions.

While functional food is making waves in the food biz, it is not surprising that consumers are also taking advantage of the transparency provided by brands to check whether the ingredients are clean, and made without additives and preservatives. I always used to look at the ingredients used to make a certain food item, not understanding what they were. But now, the age of technology allows me to take a closer look at them with just a click on my phone. Seeking out clean brands is not new, but we, the consumers have grown accustomed to double-checking what we eat. So, brands are under constant scrutiny regarding their usage of natural ingredients, sourcing, and manufacturing practices.

Since the total shutdown during the pandemic, we have started to rely a lot on online purchasing of groceries, including functional foods. Not only that, but online shopping has also made a wide variety of products available at our fingertips. Now, whenever we need something and it is not available in a simple shopping mart, we just check for its availability online. While the same happens with functional foods and drinks, we also get a choice to subscribe to these services, as one does with Netflix or Prime. As per the subscription, your products get delivered to your doorstep on time. The best thing, however, is that the brands take full advantage of this special accessibility to maintain and further their business.

This year will be the one that prioritizes health, environment, and sustainability to ensure the best for our planet, the same as the last. So it is not surprising to see that functional foods, snacks, and beverages have made it this far. This industry will continue to grow as it focuses on using clean ingredients and following sustainable practices. Their idea to use food to help with certain health issues not only puts them on the radar but also drives up their appeal. It is a good thing, for we all lead such busy lives that we often disregard our health and overall well-being.
