Onam is on Wednesday, and we're planning to go town hopping for the perfect Sadhya. A feast of sorts, it is a traditional vegetarian meal served on a banana leaf in most Malayali homes on this festive day.

Parippu (dal), an assortment of side dishes like kalan, veggies cooked in a yoghurt-based curry; olan, a mild coconut-based curry made with pumpkin and a certain variety of beans; pachadi, a raita-like accompaniment, sambhar and kootu curry, which is prepared using yam and raw green plantain and black chaana are just some of the highlights.

To be eaten with plain rice, a Sadhya is not complete without a variety of pickles, banana chips and a serving of payasam and pappadam (kheer and papad) in the end.

If you live in Mumbai, and not a Malayali (or don't have a friend from God's Own Country), there is hope.

These Malayali restaurants in the city are serving the traditional festive meal (yes, on a banana leaf!) for all you food lovers.
