Mango has been featuring on the menus of several Mumbai’s restaurants. While there are a few doing panna cottas, cheesecakes, tarts and cupcakes, we picked up the ones that’re using mangoes in the most creative ways; a special mention to those going a step forward and adding fresh, ripe mangoes to savoury dishes.

Mango Frangipani Tart @ Star Anise, Bandra West

It’s not a plain tart and that’s the reason it sits on the list of must-try mango dishes in Mumbai. It has fresh alphonso mangoes on a short crust pastry with almond cream and vanilla custard. Finished with white chocolate curls, the tart looks like a lovely flower. Dig in and you’d want to go for seconds.

The Le Cordon Bleu graduate, Chef Toshin Shetty, launched his patisserie last year and took the city by storm with his progressive desserts. Beyond the Ozone is another addition to his superbly creative menu. The velvety dessert has slow-reduced mango and mascarpone cheese filled with mango squares and vanilla dacquoise – vanilla flavoured meringue.

Chef Ranveer Brar’s latest venture is about desi mithai going global. While there’s Aamrakhand Cheesecake and the likes on the menu, our interest was piqued by Chatpata Aam Centre, which has Indian-spiced caramelised mango pulp encased in 34 per cent milk chocolate. So as you bite into the chocolate, you’ll be greeted by a gush of tangy spicy kairi.

Chef Thomas Zacharias’ mango creation is a somewhat take on the famous payasam. Served in a cutting chai glass, the trifle has fresh Alphonso mangoes, sabudana (tapioca pearls) pudding topped with coconut meringue and finished with aam papad.

When we started collating this list, we thought of staying away from the cheesecakes and panna cottas. But, this dessert from The Fatty Bao is not your regular panna cotta. Served with tapioca pearls, passion fruit, raspberry meringue and mango chilli cilantro salsa, it’s a pop of colours and flavours.

The Irani-themed restaurant is paying tribute to the city’s favourite snack with its Keri no Samosa. The deep-fried pastry has a filling of mango and dry fruits and is served with vanilla ice-cream. Other notable desserts on the menu are the Mango Ravo – mango flavoured semolina halwa and Mango Shreekhand Cheesecake.
